 2022 Preview

Montgomery Academy completed the 2021 season with a 11-4 record. Last year Montgomery Academy captured the region three title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. The Eagles won four consecutive playoff games to reach the Class 3A State Championship game only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Piedmont at the Alabama Super Seven 35-33 in Birmingham.

Over the past two seasons the Eagles have gone 24-5 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Montgomery Academy has gone a combined 94-48. Their 66.2% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 4A over the past twelve seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Montgomery Academy has gone a combined 197-99. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class 4A and 56th in the AHSAA.

The Eagles are led by head coach Robert Johnson who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 24-5 over the past two seasons at Montgomery Academy. Under his direction the Eagles have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Johnson.

Coach Johnson's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-five season stands at 176-103 (63.1%). His 176 wins rank 21st among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Johnson's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty times and won eight region championships. Coach Johnson won a state championship at Tuscaloosa Academy in 2012.

The Montgomery Academy Eagles will play in Class 4A region two during the 2022 season. The Eagles move up in classification to Class 4A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. The Eagles have one of the toughest schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 72-43 last season. That ranks 4th in Class 4A and 17th in the AHSAA.

The Eagles enter the 2022 season having won 6 straight region games.

The Eagles should be considered one of the favorites for the region two championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Eagles are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Eagles have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2012 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

The Eagles open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent St. James on Friday, August 19 at McLemore Field. Last year the St. James Trojans finished with an overall record of 10-2 and in first place in Class 4A region two. The Trojans lost in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs to Jackson by a score of 45-33.

Montgomery Academy and St. James have met a total of 49 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 28-21-0 record against the Trojans. They last met in 2021 with Montgomery Academy winning by a score of 38-36.

Montgomery Academy returns 3A All-State Senior punter Carson Springer. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. The Eagles also return Senior running back Jashawn Cooper. He was named to the first team.
